Bad Education

Finally made it to see Almodovar’s latest film, Bad Education starring the luscious Gael Garcia Bernal of Y Tu Mama Tambien.

I was a Diego Luna man myself, at least initially. I was even lured to Dirty Dancing II: Havana Nights through a misplaced crush that was itself crushed by the immense awfulness of that clunker. His co-star's turn in The Motorcycle Diaries won me over to the other side for good, even though the movie itself wasn't so hot, and made me like Che Guevara even less than all those cheesy t-shirts have.

And now, playing a character that can only be described as a minx, Bernal has me totally in his thrall. Almodovar’s loves the drag queens, but he has never actually gotten me wet for one before now. At first I thought putting the very masculine Bernal in drag (as opposed to that slip of a girl, Luna) was a sort of ribald joke. But one look at Bernal in that Gaultier dress made me want to scream "I'm every woman." Bernal as "Zahara" is simply the most beguiling screen coquette since Jessica Rabbit.
