Belo Horizonte
I am in Belo Horizonte, Brazil for ten days on an academic junket. The theme is indigenous performance, and the ethnographic hijinx have already been set in motion. Can everyone repeat after me: "Depicting performing native peoples as the living embodiment of a national heritage is a problematic and ideologically overdetermined act of appropriation that masks questions of power and equality"? Saying it several times helps.
Luckily I'm here with some great folks, and Brazil is warm and comfortable. My room overlooks this fabulous park filled with palm trees, donkey rides, canoe rentals, and, if I have any luck, an open air bar or three.
Got to go have my first caipirinha now.
